Equality in literature

A recent Bloomburg News Service report criticized literature’s Newbery Awards for giving too many awards to books about white boys, and not enough to minorities - especially since a black man has been elected President (which apparently happened fairly recently, although the report does not say how many books have been picked since that time).

I am still disappointed that so many early “classic” novels were about old men and the sea. Someone should investigate the way the literature has been skewed in favor of old men and the sea - even after non-fishermen started rising to positions of national power. More recent movies like “Titanic,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, “Master & Commander,” “Poseidon,” and “The Perfect Storm” fail to give proper regard for the way non-seafaring Americans live.

And don’t get me started about astronaut movies!

A perfect season

Congratulations to the Detroit Lions on their history-making perfect season.

Obvious answers to stupid questions

A lawyer in Arizona gave his client a piece of candy in court even after court officers told him not to. “What are you going to do, arrest me?,” he asked on Wednesday.

His question was answered on Thursday.  No word on whether he has posted bail yet.

Sometimes Free Speech Hurts

There are reports that the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush has been beaten in custody.  It’s too bad that in this rush toward free speech, security forces may have gotten carried away with their own free expression.

Weather Panic

Here’s how TV stations get you to panic over snowfall.  The weather service says Detroit will get hit with about 8 inches of snow tonight.  Channel 2 stretches it to “6 to 9 inches.”  Channel 7 says “8 to 10 inches.”  And then Channel 2 announces that we will get “nearly a foot of snow.”

Did you know . . .

Between 4 and 8 lanes wide, the massive Interstate 75 freeway is visible from outer space?

Of course it isn’t.  So what makes people think the Great Wall of China - which is much narrower - is visible from space, either?

Stunning facts

The official rules of Major League Baseball do not expressly prohibit the murder of an opposing player.

Dumbest question in the English language

“Can I borrow a Kleenex?”

Court rejects Senator Craig

The Minnesota Court of Appeals has rejected senator Larry Craig’s attempt to set aside his guilty plea for tap dancing in a public restroom.  He was hoping to get the charge reduced to tailgating.

How not to extinguish a fire

Ford fire

“Although Ford requested enough water to put out the fire, after negotiations and defeat of a filibuster it has been agreed to send Ford one-third of the water it currently needs, and the remainder will be discussed after the new Congress is seated in January.”
